Singer and songwriter Siobahn Hotaling started a music career at the age of 16. With a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and poetry, Siobahn Hotaling enjoys staying in shape, primarily by playing tennis, softball, and kettlebell training.
The kettlebell is a type of free weight that is made of cast or steel iron with a handle attached to the top. The weight is used in performing many exercises like ballistic exercises. In recent years, it has become a popular tool for fitness applications.
Although the origin of the kettlebell is somewhat unclear, its first known use dates back to 1704, with the publication of the word Girya, meaning kettlebell in the Russian dictionary. The Russians used the kettlebell as an alternative weight measure in markets to measure grains and other dry goods. Later on, as vendors began to lift these weights and throw them around for entertainment, people soon realized the health and strength benefits of the activity.
Many other cultures similarly made use of weights that resembled the kettlebell for strength training. The Scottish threw weights with handles during their Highland Games while the Chinese used stone padlocks in a type of training called the Shi-SuoGuong meaning the Art of the Stone Padlocks.
